signers of the declaration

Why Do We celebrate Independence Day?

As a tribute to the nation’s oldest celebration, Independence Day represents courage, conviction, and commitment to ideals so powerful they still hold true today. On July 4, 1776, fifty-two delegates from thirteen colonies signed the Declaration of Independence to separate from Great Britain. This significant document exhibits how the founding fathers had to take charge and responsibility to do something that had never been done before. Colonial Americans broke away from their mother country and declare themselves free.

Every word of the declaration was carefully chosen by the founding fathers on leadership, teamwork, and commitment. The T3 principles align with their continued conviction:

Teamwork – As a commitment to the concept of freedom, 56 delegates of the Continental Congress had to work together and compromise to reach a unanimous consensus. Considered an act of treason by Great Britain, each delegate risked death by signing the declaration. As signatory Benjamin Franklin said, “We must all hang together or most assuredly we will all hang separately.”

Tone – The declaration set the inspirational motivation standard for a new nation. The last sentence of this doctrine speaks volumes to the sacrifice and respect these delegates had for their newly formed country: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”  These founding fathers put their lives, fortunes and honor on the line for their country and in doing so they established a benchmark for millions of American patriots who have since followed their lead.

Tenacity – During the Revolution, the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence courageously endured nine killed (KIA) in action, five prisoners of war (POW), 12 homes burned and 17 bankruptcies with zero defectors! Despite years of deprivation and adversity, each delegate pledged to give it their all and they kept their word. They persevered with a purpose and set a standard of excellence that lives on today.
